What could be more personally fulfilling than a lucrative profession that gives purpose to life while giving you the ability to really help your clients live their life to the fullest with the permanent healing of emotional trauma.

There is a dual challenge that presents a critical dual need:

Challenge 1

We need to constantly ensure that the treatment methods or modalities we employ achieve the outcomes and provide relief for the patient’s debilitating symptoms.

Many clinicians would concur that we are often limited with “talk” therapy. There is much to be said and confirmed through many documented experiences of the great force and effect the therapeutic space can and does have! Providing a containing space for individuals to express themselves, and being present from an objective point of view to enable clients to gain perspective is powerful. However, when someone presents with severe, debilitating symptoms; when they are struggling within various facets of their lives; and when they need urgent relief, clinicians would often rely on the client's medication “to kick in” before being able to assist them therapeutically.

Yet, most clients are au fait with information about side effects linked to the continuous use of medication. Thus, more and more clients look for alternative options to be as healthy as possible, and in spite of presenting with severe symptoms, they often have a great reluctance to start any medication regime.

For example, with a client presenting with a severe case of trauma (Complex PTSD), it is not the trauma that presents the problem for intervention but rather it is the memory of the trauma that is repeatedly triggered on so many levels of functioning, in countless unpredictable circumstances in the client's daily life. This presents a problem for intervention and persists as new stressors and traumatic experiences compound and complicate the original memory of the trauma.

With this example in mind, wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could target the areas in the brain such as the amygdala, hippocampus, thalamus etcetera, and neutralise or take the ‘poison’ out of the memory? That way, the client can still remember the incident, but without the negative emotions, sensations, and other distressing symptoms related to the memory of the incident. It is extremely rewarding to witness this within a therapist-client setting. Engaging in experiential learning of this modality is an incredible first-hand experience with amazing results.

Challenge 2

As clinicians we need to manage the vicarious or secondary trauma we experience when dealing with our client’s trauma or emotional pain.

It is continually challenging to meet the challenge of always being an effective therapist. As clinicians, it is imperative to simultaneously take care of oneself by guarding against vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, and burnout. Both are crucial if clinicians are to maintain the ethical guidelines as well as work to avoid incurring an ‘expiry date’ as therapists. Many supervisors of other clinical psychologists, became more aware and frankly, frightened of the danger of becoming an impaired professional.

This can be a scary and slippery slope of entering an ethical quagmire that can be associated with a burnt-out clinician. With BBRT clinicians can be more effective by not only achieving better outcomes for clients but also managing the negative impact that helping people incurs by default within the healthcare profession.

The literature on vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, and burnout among healthcare professionals who have dealt with trauma, indicates that clinicians are not immune to succumbing to or being affected by the negative content shared and processed within the therapeutic domain. Seeing many patients, with a plethora of negative experiences, has a compounding effect, impacting the clinician adversely with devastating effects. With BBRT, this problem is taken care of because the trauma can be targeted before it is described in words; spoken of; or processed verbally.

It has been extremely rewarding to hear the expressions and sentiments of countless clients who have undergone BBRT, immediately after their session and then thereafter they describe experiencing permanent relief. The good news is that BBRT is a paradigm shift in treating ADHD, cravings linked to addiction, self-harm, anxiety, depression, etcetera. BBRT-certified clinicians receive many referrals for symptom relief. After a maximum of four BBRT sessions, the client continues with their long-term therapeutic process with their clinician, yet the root of their emotional distress is eliminated. BBRT will take your practice to the next level and if you are not in private practice, this skill will set you apart from other clinicians making you more sought after.

Thank you for considering the foundation upon which BBRT has been built.
